TCV Alumni Association UK raises funds for Tibetan refugee schools in India Oct 21, 2019 ‹ › × The TCV Alumni Association (UK), a network of UK-based former students and staff of the Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) schools in India, organised a community fundraising event that consisted of bright and colourful Tibetan cultural performance as well as other entertaining activities at the St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church Hall in east London on 19th October 2019. Mr. Penpa Sirso, Chairman of the TCV Alumni Association (UK), addressed the gathering and said, "The primary goal of this community fundraising event is to support our TCV schools in India". Tsering Passang, who represented the Tibet Foundation, attended the fundraising event at the invitation of the TCV Alumni Association (UK). The Tibet Foundation is a leading UK-based charity which supports the good work of the TCV in providing quality education for Tibetan refugee children for many decades. Currently, the Tibet Foundation is supporting about 200 Tibetan refugee children at various TCV schools in India through its ongoing child sponsorship scheme. The TCV is a major educational establishment for Tibetan refugee children in India, which was set up by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Started with 51 Tibetan children on 17th May 1960, the late Mrs. Tsering Dolma Takla, the elder sister of the Dalai Lama, volunteered to look after the refugee children when their parents worked as labourers on the road construction sites in northern India. After the death of his elder sister, His Holiness Dalai Lama’s younger sister, Mrs. Jetsun Pema, who later became a Minister for the Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration, took over the responsibility of looking after the welfare and educational needs of the Tibetan refugee children. Despite the hardships, the TCV has grown over the years which became a natural and first home for thousands of Tibetan refugee children fleeing Tibet as well as for those from the poorer section of the Tibetan refugee community in India, Nepal, and Bhutan. The Tibetan refugee community needs continued support from us. We at Tibet Foundation thank and welcome the efforts being made by the TCV Alumni Association (UK) to help their former schools. Well done and keep up the good work! If anyone would like to sponsor a Tibetan child at the TCV in India, please feel free to contact us.
